YouTube ad campaign rolls out dual view ads for livestreams on web and tv

YouTube has introduced a new ad format aimed at increasing monetization for livestream creators, releasing side by side mid roll ads for qualified streams on both the web and connected TVs (CTV).

This new feature minimizes the primary livestream window in an ad break, having the advertisement in an independent frame within the video player. The audio of the livestream is temporarily paused during the ad play, which continues when the ad reaches its end or is skipped, maintaining visual continuity for the audience, though momentarily interrupted by sound.

In a formal statement, YouTube outlined, "The ad will appear next to the livestream inside the video player. The audio of the stream will be muted, and the audio of the ad will play, then the video player will expand again, and the audio of the stream will resume."

The move underscores YouTube's shifting focus in the livestreaming domain, which is fast earning credence elsewhere across the globe. In 2023, around 163 million Americans tuned into influencer livestreaming programs, all emphasis on the customer's continued demand for real-time and interactive content.

YouTube is framing this ad format as a win win, bringing new ad inventory to brands while allowing creators to monetize more without having to totally stop their content. The feature works on livestreams aired at regular latency and needs creators to turn on the "Let YouTube Decide" mid roll option.
